I was born and raised in California. I got my B.A. (in International Relations and French) at UC Berkeley; lived in France for several years; and then completed a Ph.D. in Political Science at UCLA. I was an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan until late 2012, and a Senior Lecturer at Victoria University (New Zealand) from 2013 to 2017. I'm now an Associate Professor at the Australian National University.
I have three daughters. The oldest, Sophie, was born with a heart condition known as heterotaxy/right isomerism. After a lifelong medical battle at three US children's hospitals, she passed away. If you or your child has this condition and would like to talk, please contact me. The greatest tribute I can give to Sophie is to help the families of others with this difficult condition.
I have two living daughters. When I'm not chasing after them, I love cycling, hiking, food, and warm places. And I'm in eternal pursuit of friends with boats.
